OK, here we go: I took my phone to the golf course and tracked my way round the course! One thing to note is that the phone was in my carry bag, so the route shows where the bag went.
I started the app only after my first tee shot, that's why it doesn't start next to the first tee. Unfortunately the phone ran out of battery after 17 holes :(. Luckily the sportstracker app still saved my progress. I would have been well p.o.'d if it was all gone!
This is my first attempt to use the Sportstracker app:
And here are some more photos! When you look at them, make sure you also look at the full size versions. I am amazed at how well the N82 camera captures the depth. Looking at the photos almost gives me the same feel as when I was actually standing there at the top. Really good. Oh, and another note: I am not a photographer, all I did was point and click in auto mode. I have got no clue about all the different photo settings and whatnot. Temperature was -20 C, and the battery lasted the whole day.
It's been a bit quiet the last few days it the Nokia / Symbian world. No new devices or compelling software to talk about? I s'pose everyone is busy with pre-XMas activities such as buying presents, getting boozed up with every remote acquaintance, organizing post-XMas booze ups to get away from uncle and aunties family gatherings, etc. You know what I mean.
Well, my XMas preparations this year include getting my phone ready for my upcoming holiday in Switzerland. What will I need?
1. Phone charger plus adapter for Europe. Check.
2. Bluetooth keyboard to be able to blog from the top of the mountain. Buy in Singapore.
3. My favourite music on the memory card. Check.
4. Fring and Truphone installed in case I find a free wifi hotspot. TODO.
5. Remove stuff I don't really need from my memory card so that I can store lots of photos and videos. TODO.
6. Download Switzerland and Singapore maps. Check.
7. What else?
Have I forgotten anything? I really wish I had Mail for Exchange, sigh.
A while ago I was looking for some new themes and came across PiZero's 'Gold' theme. It looked stunning on my old E65 and I decided to also use it on my new N82. Now, PiZero has come out with a new version of the Gold theme and it's even better looking (not that I thought it would be possible!). Unfortunately it makes Y-Browser crash intermittently (on the N82, it works fine on the E65). It doesn't worry me too much as I am not using Y-Browser that often.
I always like to support creative people like PiZero; having a new theme on my phone every now and then makes me happy and it almost feels like having a new phone :)
One of my ideas for this blog was that I would create all posts directly from my N82. So far I found 3 different ways of doing that:
1. Use the Online Service directly from the gallery. This is a good way if you want to upload photos and videos. It uploads blog posts in the background so you can continue to browse the gallery. You can add some text if you want, but it's a bit cumbersome if you want to write a lot. It also supports uploading photos to Flickr.
2. Download and install the Vox app on to your phone. To be honest, this was kind of disappointing to me as the text input field is still limited and does not really have any benefit over using the Online Service app. I suppose the app was made available for users that do not have the Online Service app on their phone, so it's still a good app to have if you want to upload photos and videos to Vox, but don't have one of the newer N-Series phones.
3. Send an email to the Vox email address provided under 'Mobile Settings'. This is what I am doing right now. The subject becomes the blog title, and the email body becomes the blog text. Pretty easy and good for text only posts as you can use the messaging editor, which you would use for writing text messages and emails.
Unfortunately none of the options above lets me format the text properly. Further on my feature wish list for blogging from my phone would be: preview the blog post and insert proper caption for the uploaded photos and videos (it defaults it to the upload date right now).
I have been using Mail 4 Exchange on my phone for over a year now, so changing to the N82 and not being able to use it is disappointing. I made the wrong assumption that releasing it for the N95 and N81 would make it available for my N82 as well. But that's not the case. Sigh. According to one of the Nokia discussion forums, Nokia has tightened the security with new devices support. It's possible to install the app, but when I try to run it, a 'unsupported device' error message gets displayed.
As a workaround I am now using the normal email client on the phone. The problem with that is that it keeps the internet connection going even when there is nothing to do. And it's kind of flaky as it does not sync back to the exchange server whether or not an email has been read.
Bottom line: I really really want Mail for Exchange for my N82!
I took this while the security guards were not watching...
Hey, are you using this again this year? Would love to see an update. read more
